A smart TV connects to the internet and runs streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer directly, without a separate box. Popular platforms include Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and Roku.
Most new TVs are smart by default. If you own an older set, a £30-50 streaming stick such as Fire TV Stick or Chromecast adds the same apps. A built-in smart platform is more convenient, but an external stick is often faster to update.
It comes down to preference. LG webOS and Samsung Tizen are slick and fast, Google TV offers strong content recommendations, and Fire TV integrates tightly with Prime Video. All major platforms carry the main UK streaming apps.
