How to choose a TV

Screen size

Match the size to your viewing distance and room. For most living rooms, 55-65 inches hits the sweet spot. With 4K you can sit closer to a big screen without seeing pixels.

Resolution

4K (Ultra HD) is the standard — sharp, affordable and where all the content is. 8K is niche and expensive; skip it for now.

Panel type

OLED delivers perfect blacks and the best contrast. QLED/LED gets brighter and costs less. Choose OLED for dark-room film nights, QLED/LED for bright rooms and value — see OLED vs QLED.

HDR & smart features

Look for HDR10 and, ideally, Dolby Vision support for better contrast and colour. Check the smart platform (webOS, Google TV, Tizen, Fire TV) has the apps you use.

Gaming features

For a PS5/Xbox or PC, look for HDMI 2.1, 120Hz support and VRR for smooth, tear-free gaming.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best TV to buy in the UK in 2026?

For picture quality, OLED leads; for brightness and value, QLED/LED 4K sets are excellent. The right size for your room and a genuine 4K panel matter more than the brand. Our list ranks the best value TVs by price per megapixel so you can compare fairly.

What size TV should I buy?

A common guide is to sit about 1.5-2.5x the screen's diagonal away. For a typical living room (2-3m viewing distance), 55-65 inches is the sweet spot. Bigger is usually better with 4K, as you won't see individual pixels.

Is OLED or QLED better?

OLED has perfect blacks and per-pixel contrast, ideal for dark-room film watching. QLED (a type of LED) gets brighter and is often cheaper, better for bright rooms and value. See our OLED vs QLED guide for the details.

Do I need a 4K or 8K TV?

4K is the standard and where nearly all content and value sit in 2026. 8K TVs exist but native 8K content is scarce and they cost far more — 4K is the right choice for almost everyone.
